Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s suitability is not in question. What are we really asking for when we ask?
Vaibav became the highest wicket-taker of the 2026 IPL season on his fifteenth birthday. Shardul hit a six on his first ball and became famous in local and international cricket.

It was his first ball. He rated it a six. No jitters. No accident. He hit it as a man that has been waiting for this very moment, and he had been, but not for as long as most people that dwell in one city.
But no one was ready for what was to come in that 1st innings nine days later.
April 28: Jaipur. Gujarat Titans 210/7 (20.0) A goal to end the season. A target that raises serious concerns for entire batting line-ups especially a young player playing his second or third IPL match. Why do we keep running when the ball keeps going out of bounds?

In one over of Karim Janat he scored thirty runs. This was Janat’s first over in IPL. Not quite the cordial welcome he had anticipated.
It was not a figure that looked like the 166-run opening partnership with Jaiswal that evening, the highest ever for RR at the top. It was like a declaration. On top are two southpaws, both of whom are explosive in different ways. That wristy whippy violent Jaiswal. Sooryavanshi and something more elusive. His hitting has a compactness that produces numbers that are not compact at all.
252 runs in seven matches. Strike rate is 206.56. The fact he was fired four of seven times is a stark reminder of the campaign’s one real weakness: the same flair that makes him dangerous also sometimes lets him down.

This is a fielder at the boundary attempt, and this is a mistimed aerial shot. It’s just good technique, all of it. Fair enough. You’re fourteen years old, and you’re swinging that fast out on stage. It’s just a slight miscalculation.
He’s old and so I feel like I should mention it in passing because it feels dishonest not to. There was some questioning among ex-internationals – not from outsiders – as to whether anyone capable of such power-hitting could possibly be fourteen. His dad talked to it. BCCI bone density testing was brought up.
As so often with these questions, the answer was not forthcoming. He may have been 14 years old or thereabouts, but what he produced in the 2025 Indian Premier League was certainly no teenage aberration. It was the cricket. The cricket is played at a pace that would make grown men look like pedestrians, and is methodical, bold and technically sound.
Vaibhav SooryaVanshi is no Prodigy
In a way, the importance of Bihar origin here is not often stated. This is not the result of a well-funded metro academy environment commuting 100 kilometers on alternate days from Samastipur to Patna. A coach who believes in time enough to make a difference. A parent who put all his unfulfilled dreams of playing cricket on his son.
It doesn’t account for the talent. The talent is inexplicable.” But it puts the poise in perspective. He has not had the luxury of falling to bits. He’s been getting ready for this moment for a long time.
These are not footnotes. They are evidence. There was no sound in the IPL season. It was a sign.
Sooryavanshi is no prodigy in the soft, hedged sense of the word where potential is the tale and output is postponed as the 2025 season actually revealed. He’s a prodigy in the risky sense, where the promise is what makes you a little afraid of what might come next, but the production is already here.
And at a strike rate of 206 in seven IPL innings at the age of fourteen, the contrast in what he is doing now and what he could do with two more seasons of exposure is stark. It’s enormous.
Media pressure On Vaibhav SooryaVanshi
Media pressure, management overload and expectations beyond talent alone can destroy a fledgling career. This is the cautionary tale of T20 cricket. Credit to Rajasthan Royals, they don’t seem interested in that version. They trusted the process. They stuck with him. They played him in front of Jaiswal. That confidence was generously reciprocated.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his IPL debut in 2025. That was a statement. This story is more than outstanding because he was just starting out.
